2012 Review: Roland Emmerich’s huge destructive blockbuster strikes
In 2009, an Indian scientist encounters a terrible knowledge that represents the future of human existence to drastically questioned. The government is preparing a secret plan that is to take effect in 2012. The divorced and not very successful author Curtis Jackson (John Cusack), meanwhile, travels with his children over the weekend in Yellowstone National Park. In place of adventure where they meet a military-fenced area. Only the funky living on the neighboring campsite radio host Charlie Frost (Woody Harrelson) influenced Jackson with the certainty that the apocalypse will arrive on 21/12/2012. And not only that the government build ships, to save the elect before the end.
Meanwhile, is unfolding in Los Angeles, already the first disaster, as developed by the San Andreas Fault a lethal life of its own. Jackson can save his ex-wife Kate (Amanda Peet) and their friend, before the earth opens up and threatens to engulf the entire city. Henceforth, the small group take their lives into their own hands – in search of a glimmer of hope to be able to avoid the “end” as good as possible …
Movie rating
When it comes to the crown of the “ultimate blockbuster” 2009, are Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich clearly the favorites. When it comes to the question of who shows in his film, more destruction, the German-born is clearly ahead. To describe in one word: Wow!
In Independence Day, he had dispatched aliens to us, in The Day After Tomorrow, the eternal ice age came, and in 2012 he just leaves time to destroy the earth. Do not worry! It’s really just a movie, because it must make clear to you during the 150 minutes over again. The global destruction has so realistically that one’s popcorn stuck in my throat. Presents us with spectacular effects Emmerich presented his vision of the apocalypse. His trademark, to celebrate the destruction, takes on gigantic proportions in 2012. The fact that the basic idea of the Mayan culture (remember: the Mayan calendar only goes up to the date 21.12.2012) immediately recedes into the background, was already clear from the outset.
Apart from all the explosions, collapsing skyscrapers, tidal waves and fiery rock falls, there are obviously still some people who are not determined entirely voluntarily to prove themselves as heroes. As in any Emmerich feast we have the different characters of different races and social backgrounds. No diamonds, but they still make a good impression in this hellish mess. As Normalo Curtis Jackson, John Cusack operates at the forefront, of course, no scientist, but author, who could sell just 500 copies of his first book. Or Amanda Peet as an ex-wife Kate, will present a shadow of their former selves, the innocence per se Emmerich on the golden plates: the children – brave little wretches who grow out of their fear. This mix is not new to disaster movies, and certainly not for the German director, but it works. Emmerich has a penchant for ordinary people to accomplish the Large, while a stand the important people in an emergency, the government simply as a cynical wimps. A nice thought.
In 2012, no conflict between science and religion exists between fact and faith, and then only in very cryptic approach. Much more depends on the question to us all: What would we do if the end would actually happen? Would we be willing to help others, or we want to save our own selfish ass? At this point, the film offers in spite of its blockbuster concept still possible to think about it. Who does not want to do this can be easily carried away by the thrilling action can be.
The question of whether the pleasure of 3D would be even better, can be difficult to answer. 150 minutes with a roar of 3D glasses were a great strain on the eyes. If we let the technology mature a bit and who knows, maybe Emmerich comes back in a few years and promises us the ultimate kick in 3D. Until then, we hope that the Earth after 21 December 2012 despite everything, continues to spin …
Conclusion: 2012 meets all expectations and presents spectacular Hollywood cinema par excellence. Although some situations are strong on the border of realism, you get a hefty dose terrific action, a story with an interesting background of thought and its laughs. The film is for fans of the genre’s clearly a must. A feast for the eyes, just like him only love can make Roland Emmerich.
